Aims on physical
fitness and mental ability
for the upcoming sports players

Established in 1965,the department has produced a number of sporting heroes and heroines who won many laurels at university level sports and promote lot of physically fit citizens.

A brief history about the achievements of the department in the past few years.

A meeting including the beloved manager, principal and PTA members of the college was held on the beginning of the academic year 2016 to discuss the improvement of sports performance in the university and south India level tournaments.

The meeting decided to give more emphasis to football, cricket and shuttle badminton men’s team, chess men and women and basketball women team. The meeting also decided to start a inter collegiate sports fest including football, cricket and shuttle in men’s category and basketball in women’s category and an overall championship trophy in the name of “Phedeppides” for the college which acquires maximum points. “Phedeppides” was the name used for the Olympic event “marathon”. In the first edition of the tournament St alberts college won the overall championship (2017-18) and in the second edition Bharata Mata College became the overall champions (2018-19).

The women’s chess team became the university winners in the year2016-17and could defend the title in 2017-18 and finished second in the year 2018-19. The men’s team became runners in the year 2016-17.

The men’s cricket team participated in the Riviera international Arts and Cultural fest held at VIT Vellore, Tamilnadu in 2017-18. The team could also manage a semi-final berth in the National level T20 tournament conducted by Scott Christian College, Nagercoil in 2018-19. The team finished 5^th in the university competitions in the year 2018-19. This year five players got selected to the ongoing University camp at St. Pauls college, Kalamassery.

The men’s shuttle badminton team participated in the Riviera international sports and cultural fest held at VIT, Vellore for the last three years and finished second in the Tournament. The men’s shuttle badminton became the university champions in 2018-19 with two from our team got selected to represent the University. The department head Dr.Shiby John accompanied the university team as manager to SRM University. The college team could defend the title this year and four out of eight members to represent the university came from our college. This year too the department head Dr.Shiby John will accompany the university team to SRM University, Chennai. Hope this time the team qualifies for the inter zone (All India).

About University points

In 2014-15 the college could only manage fairly 7 points and in 2015-16 could grab 4 more points to make it 11. It further improved to 15 in 2016-17. In 2017-18 we could achieve 26 points and last year we got 39 points and finished 22^nd in the University out 122.
