Department of Zoology

From the time of inception of Bharata Mata College in 1965, Prof. P.P.John was a Faculty member in Zoology . Zoology as an Under Graduate department started in the year 1970 with a sanctioned strength of 36 students and Dr. A. Madhavan as the Head of the Department. The department has had a rich tradition of inculcating good values in students, apart from imparting knowledge to them. True to the spirit of its motto “Sarvajeevi Mangalam”, the Zoology students are moulded into individuals having concern for their fellow beings and environment. Nurtured over the years by the stalwarts, the Zoology department stands high by all means.

Strengths and Achievements

The department has a vibrant group of teachers, who ensure, the department achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities. Two minor projects, funded by UGC have been successfully completed. Dr. Simi Joseph P , Asst. Professor was selected for FLAIR Fostering Linkages in Academic Innovation and Research – an initiative of the Department of Higher Education, Government of Kerala. An MOU with Unibiosys Biotech Research Labs, S. Kalamassery, Kochi, for co-operation in the field of Research, Technology & Transfer since 2014 speaks volumes about the scientific prowess. The department has always been keen on non-scholastic development of students. Championship in Arts Festival many a times is a testimony to this. The department has an active Zoology Association and a nature club Friends Of Fauna (FOF), an extension wing of Zoology association. Department of Zoology has been publishing a manuscript magazine christened ‘Nautilus’ since 1989 to nurture the soft skills of our students. The zoology department has bagged the “Best Zoology Association Award” and the “Best Manuscript Magazine Award” instituted by The Zoological Society of Kerala, many a times. The well set ‘Zoology Museum’ has a good collection of bottled and stuffed specimens.

  • Manuscript magazine – “Nautilus”is being released annually since 1988.
  • Maximum encouragement is given to the zoology students for participation in co-curricular activities.
  • Annual and regular conduct of Inter-collegiate Debate competition; Inter-school Quiz competition; Inter departmental Quiz; Observance of days of scientific importance.
  • The zoology department has bagged the “Best Zoology Association Award” and the “Best Manuscript Magazine Award” instituted by The Zoological Society of Kerala, many a time.
  • The department has a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) signed on the 7thday of March, 2014 with Unibiosys Biotech Research Labs, S. Kalamassery, Kochi and Dept. of Zoology, BMC, Thrikkakara for co-operation in the field of Research, Technology & Transfer and for the collaborative conduct of seminars and workshops.
  • Articlesof scientific interest are collected and displayed on the department notice board regularly, with a view to inculcate and develop in young minds, a scientific curiosity and reading habit.
  • Maintenance of Aquarium in the zoology class rooms.
  • A weekly quiz – “ZOOQUEST” for students of the college.
  • Friends Of Fauna (FOF) nature club, under whose banner Zoology students are taken for Nature Camps regularly.
  • Students are sent to attend seminars in other colleges.

ASSOCIATIONS AND EVENTS

Department of Zoology has a well functioning Zoology Association and Friends of Fauna – a nature club and an extension wing of zoology association. The various activities regularly and annually conducted under its banner include Inter-collegiate Debate competition for Rev. Fr. Jacob Kariatty Memorial Ever rolling Trophy; Inter-school Quiz competition for higher secondary students in connection with Wild Life Week; Inter departmental Quiz competition for Prof. P.P. John ever rolling trophy during Energy Conservation week; Observance of days of scientific importance such as June 5-World Environment Day, July 11- World Population Day, August 6 – Hiroshima Day, September 16 – World Ozone Day, December 1 – World Aids Day. The ENCON club (Energy Conservation) functions jointly with the zoology association.

Department of Zoology has been publishing a manuscript magazine christened ‘Nautilus’ since 1989 to nurture the soft skills of our students. ‘Nautilus’ calligraphically depicts articles on science & literature, poetry, sketching, paintings, cartoons, etc. so that the soft skills of our students are brought to light.

Events 

  • World Ozone Day celebration on 16.09.2015, jointly by zoology & chemistry department in collaboration with KSCSTE: Theme – “30 Years of Healing the Ozone Together” an inter collegiate power point presentation competition was conducted apart from several other competitions like collage, painting etc.
  • The Department of Zoology took the initiative in conducting an ‘Aquarium Setting and Management’ programme for the local community.The participants were given hands-on training on the same in 2015-16.
  • An exhibition of museum specimens was held on 12.02.2015 to the public and students of other schools. Around 200 students visited our museum and lab.
  • Zoology alumni re-union was held on 26.01.2015.

WORKSHOPS/STUDENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

  • Conducted an ‘Exhibition of Museum Specimens’on 03.03.2017. Around 92 students from outside visited the exhibition.
  • A Seminar on “Rabies and Stray Dog Control” by Dr. Ranju Antony on 28.09.2015 in connection with international Anti-rabies day.
  • State level Two day Hands on Training Workshop in “Molecular Biotechnology” was conducted on Dec.30th& 31st, 2014 in collaboration with UNIBIOSYS Biotech Research Lab, Kochi.
  • Workshop on ‘Aquarium making & Setting’ for the local community of KanagarapadyPanchayat (self-help groups) on 28thFebruary 2014.
  • A Seminar on “Marine Biodiversity” was conducted on June 5th, 2014 in connection with World Environment Day, in which N. Gopakumar, Asst. Director, MPEDA(an alumnus) was the main speaker.
